have a green halloween

A few tips on how to have a greener Halloween:

*Use a resuable trick-or-treating bag. My favorite was always a pillow case, until one year mine got swiped (full of candy, and right out of my hands) by some mean, older trick-or-treaters. Sigh.

*Make smart costume choices. Make a homemade costume using reusable supplies, old clothes, cardboard boxes, old toys, etc. Go to a thrift store for stuff. Or borrow a costume for your kids from a friend. I have tons to loan out, from 10 years and four kids worth of Halloweens.

*If you are having a Halloween Party use natural decorations (pumpkins, corn stalks, gourds, etc.), email your invitations, and use reusable plates, cups and utensils. Unless you are inviting my mom. She doesn't know how to work email.

*Also, if you are so inclined, candy can be composted. Remove the wrappers first.

I always have the inner struggle of giving out candy vs. giving out a non-candy item. One year I bought those small tubs of play-dough. I just remember that the teenaged trick-or-treaters didn't want it and looked at me like I was crazy. They said they wanted candy. Husband kept telling me that our house was going to get egged. Someone mentioned giving out hair barrettes. That sounds cute for little girls, but what about boys and those picky teenagers? And I really don't want to give out stuff that is just going to get thrown away. Any suggestions?

Great ideas. I too love the pillow case as a trick or treat bag :)

Do a party instead:) Or give out "kids stuff" like the playdough and have a few big candybars around to impress the teenagers (you can't put them in your regular basket, though). Give the candy to a charity (or the bishop) instead of throwing it away.

And I miss you guys, too. Josh has through Oct. in football, and then we can get together!!!

What about school supplies like pencils/pens/erasers, etc.? Teenagers would like them (or at least they would have a need for them). My daughter who is 6 loves them and my son who is 22 months LOVES to write with pencils. ABC and other catalog sites have them in bulk and really inexpensive...

I gave away Halloween pencils once- the kinds with with fun shaped erasers - they were a great price at Sam's and most people loved them.

Who cares what you give out! It's supposed to be fun and "you get what you get and don't throw a fit!" Tell those rotten teenagers who are too old to be trick or treating that this year!

Well those teenagers should've been grateful for the play dough... it could've been my house when I was really little- my dad worked for "colgate" and gave out toothbrushes! haha

I'm a candy girl, I love candy- so I don't have any good suggestions for you- sorry! :)
